Pigeon Magazine was a chance for me to step into the role of Art Director and take creative ownership of a collaborative editorial project. Working with a team of designers, I shaped the magazine’s visual identity from concept to completion, setting the tone, developing the style, and ensuring every element reflected both the creative energy of Wolverhampton and the Black Country and my own design approach.

What's On

This project was an exciting opportunity to step into the role of Art Director and shape the visual identity of Pigeon, a magazine celebrating the creative industries of Wolverhampton and the Black Country. From concept to completion, I led the development of the magazine’s tone, layout, and styling , ensuring every element felt bold, textured, and purposeful while reflecting both the region and my own design style.
I created detailed style sheets covering typography, colour palette, grid systems, and image treatments, including unique Photoshop gradient maps for each article to keep the visual rhythm consistent. To help guide the Level 3 design team, I produced tutorials and setup files to ensure everyone could confidently apply the style and maintain a cohesive look across the spreads.
Collaborating closely with the team, I ran creative meetings, assigned roles, gave feedback, and supported their development. I also interviewed local creative director Jay Eccleston, crafting a feature article that felt personal and authentic, a highlight that strengthened my editorial and industry communication skills.
Throughout the process, I refined technical skills in Photoshop, image treatment, and print preparation, carefully proofing and test printing pages to perfect colour and clarity. Leading this project taught me the value of clear direction, teamwork, adaptability, and how to see a vision through from first ideas to a finished printed piece I’m proud to have created.
