The aim of this project was to explore as many ways as possible to create a composition within a two-inch square using only red, black, and white to form a 2 and X. This brief pushed me to think creatively and quickly, generating ideas that moved beyond the obvious.

I began with simple sketches, focusing on the physical forms of the numbers and letters. As I developed the work, I experimented with layering shapes, playing with opacity, and building more abstract interpretations in Illustrator. This hands-on approach sparked unexpected ideas, and I produced hundreds of variations.
Wanting to take the project further, I explored different media, hand-drawing, stamping, acrylic painting, and coloured pencil, which brought a tactile quality to the work. I displayed these variations in a hand bound book using semi transparent paper, allowing the designs to layer and interact across pages, giving depth and movement that screen-based work couldn’t capture.
This project taught me the value of fast idea generation, creative risk taking, and thinking beyond the obvious. It shaped how I approach later projects by improving my decision making and pushing me to explore unexpected solutions.
